Some pieces feel like a page from a childhood book, and this one does. The pendant is a flat wooden tablet, painted by hand in bold black and cream in the style of a woodcut print: a chubby little child crawls across it, with leaves, a flower and tiny blossoms around him. It hangs from a soft black thread cord, and on each side, going up, sit a round black fabric bead finished with white kantha-style running stitches, a cluster of white cowrie shells and a glossy purple bead. The earrings are small cream wooden tags hand-lettered with অ and আ, the first letters every Bengali child learns, each topped with a white thread-wrapped bead and a black bead. Handpicked from Santiniketan for Jhaapi, it looks lovely with an off-white handloom saree, a khadi kurta or a plain black top.
Every Jhaapi piece is handmade, so tiny variations make yours one of a kind.
