The peacock has always strutted across Bengal’s crafts, from temple terracotta to alpana on the floor. This mayur carries that on: shaped in clay, fired, then painted by hand feather by feather. It hangs in two parts, the peacock’s body with its crested head on top and a rounded cluster of tail feathers below, so the tail moves a little when you do. On each side, a gold bead, a brown wooden bead and another gold bead lead into a thick bundle of black cotton threads. We handpicked this set from Santiniketan, where clay and colour are part of everyday life. Wear it with a tant or a handloom saree for pujo, or over a plain kurta when you want one bold piece to do the talking.
