The story of Jhaapi

Every Bengali home has a jhaapi of treasures

ঝাঁপি

A jhaapi is the cane box where a Bengali woman kept what she treasured: her gohona, alta, sindoor and letters. The Lakshmir jhaapi, covered in cowrie shells, is still worshipped in Bengali homes.

Ours is filled by the karigors of Bishnupur, Bankura, Santiniketan and beyond. Every piece is handmade and worth keeping.
