Santiniketan has always loved colour: Poush Mela stalls, Basanta Utsav, kantha spread out in the sun. This set carries all of it. Ten flat, angular pieces of black terracotta are shaped by hand, fired, and then painted one small patch at a time: stripes and triangles of pink, teal, yellow, red, orange, blue, green and white, each outlined in black, with strokes of gold here and there. No two pieces carry the same pattern. Strung with tiny gold-tone beads between them and a green wooden bead at each end, they sit in a wide hasuli-style curve across the collarbones, and hang from soft, multi-strand black cotton thread. The studs are small black terracotta diamonds with the same patchwork of pink, white, teal, yellow and red between two gold bands. Handpicked from Santiniketan for Jhaapi, it is made for a plain black or white handloom saree on an Ashtami evening, and just as bold over a mustard kurta at a college fest.
