Madur, the soft golden mat-grass that Bengal has woven into floor mats for generations, becomes a pendant here. A small panel of madur is framed in black cotton fabric, and a black half-moon on it carries “মা দুর্গা”, hand-painted in white. Across the panel sits a tiny bamboo ektara, the one-string instrument of Bengal’s Bauls, and along the bottom hang four white cowrie shells, each on a red bead. The pendant rises on a braided black cord through light bamboo tube beads and dark brown wooden beads. The earrings are black fabric half-moons with the same “মা দুর্গা” lettering, each finished with a red bead and a cowrie. Handpicked from Santiniketan for Jhaapi, it is made for Pujo mornings: wear it with a laal-paar white saree, a Tangail cotton or a simple khadi kurta.
