In Bengal, a line of alta around the feet means something is about to be celebrated: a wedding morning, Lakshmi Puja, Bijoya Dashami. This set carries that moment in clay. On a black, textured terracotta pendant, a raised foot is painted in warm orange, outlined in alta red with tiny dots, with a golden dotted payel at the ankle and a little toe ring at the tip. Golden leaf vines on green stems climb up either side, and the edges shimmer in teal. Two gold-painted beads join the pendant to soft, many-strand black cotton thread. The earrings are small black terracotta drops with coral leaves on a green vine and bright blue edges. Handpicked from Santiniketan for Jhaapi, it is made for a laal-paar saree on pujo mornings, and just as happy with a black khadi kurta.
