Our story

From Bolpur, a jhaapi for all of India

Jhaapi was started by Sonamani Dey to carry Bengal’s handmade treasures, and the people who make them, from local haats to homes across the country.

Meet our founder

Sonamani Dey

Sonamani was born and brought up in Bolpur, in Birbhum, right beside Santiniketan. She grew up surrounded by karigors: painted terracotta, cowrie and thread jewellery, kantha, and the handloom sarees Bengal wears to pujo and weddings. For her, these weren’t “crafts”. They were everyday life.

She also saw how far this work usually travels: to the local haat, a mela once a year, and not much further. Beautiful pieces, made by skilled hands, that most of India never gets to see.

Jhaapi is her way of changing that.

The idea

Why we called it Jhaapi

ঝাঁপি

A jhaapi is the cane box where a Bengali woman kept what she treasured: her gohona, alta, sindoor and letters.

Sonamani wanted a jhaapi for all of Bengal’s handmade work: one place to keep it, share it and carry it further. First across West Bengal, then to the whole country.

Vocal for local

Handmade in Bengal, loved across India

Every Jhaapi order supports the local makers behind it.

i.

ii.

Empowering local creators

We work directly with karigors and small makers, taking their work to buyers far beyond their town.

iii.

Keeping traditions alive

Terracotta, dokra, cowrie and kantha stay in everyday use when people wear and gift them.
